Overview
The Marangu Route is one of the most popular trails used to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it is known for being the only Kilimanjaro route where climbers stay in mountain huts instead of tents. These huts provide basic but comfortable shelter, with bunk beds, mattresses, solar lighting, and shared dining areas where climbers gather for meals.
The route follows the southeastern side of the mountain and is considered one of the more direct paths to the summit. Accommodation is provided at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo huts, which offer communal sleeping quarters and shared facilities. Lower huts have running water and proper washrooms, while facilities at higher elevations are simpler due to the remote alpine environment.
Because this itinerary reaches the summit in five days, it is the shortest route to the top of Kilimanjaro. While the pace is faster than other routes, it remains a rewarding option for trekkers who are well prepared and comfortable with a quicker ascent profile. Climbers pass through several ecological zones including rainforest, heathland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit region before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters.

Day By Day
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Your Kilimanjaro climb begins after breakfast with a drive to Marangu Gate, the main access point for the Marangu Route located within Kilimanjaro National Park. After completing registration procedures and meeting the mountain crew, the trek officially begins.
The trail leads through a lush tropical rainforest filled with towering trees, dense vegetation, and a variety of wildlife. During the hike you may encounter black-and-white colobus monkeys and hear the calls of numerous bird species hidden within the forest canopy.
After several hours of gradual climbing, you arrive at Mandara Hut, a comfortable mountain hut located within the forest zone. In the afternoon, there is an optional short walk to Maundi Crater, a viewpoint that offers beautiful panoramic views of northern Tanzania and, on clear days, the distant plains of Kenya.
- Elevation: 1860m / 6100ft to 2700m / 8875ft
- Distance: 8 km / 5 miles
- Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
- Habitat: Montane Forest
- Meals: Lunch and Dinner
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
After breakfast, the trail gradually climbs out of the rainforest and into open moorland. The landscape begins to change dramatically as thick forest gives way to rolling hills, shrubs, and unique alpine vegetation.
This section of the route offers stunning views of the surrounding mountain scenery. The jagged peak of Mawenzi becomes clearly visible, while the massive summit dome of Kibo appears in the distance. Along the way you may see distinctive plant species such as giant lobelias and groundsels, which thrive in Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude environment.
The trek continues steadily until you reach Horombo Hut, located in a scenic valley with spectacular views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This camp is larger than Mandara and serves as a popular resting point for climbers.
Elevation: 2700m / 8875ft to 3700m / 12,200ft
Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Heathland / Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Today’s hike takes you into a much harsher alpine environment. After leaving Horombo Hut, the trail crosses a vast open plateau known as the Saddle, which lies between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo.
The vegetation becomes sparse as the landscape transforms into a rocky, desert-like terrain. This area often feels remote and dramatic, highlighting the immense scale of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic landscape.
After several hours of trekking across this high-altitude desert, you reach Kibo Hut, the final camp before the summit attempt. Here you will have dinner and rest while preparing for the challenging overnight climb to the summit. Climbers usually go to bed early because the summit ascent begins shortly after midnight.
- Elevation: 3700m / 12,200ft to 4700m / 15,500ft
- Distance: 9 km / 5.5 miles
- Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
The most demanding and rewarding day of the trek begins around midnight. With headlamps lighting the way, you start the slow and steady climb up the steep volcanic slopes of Kibo.
The path ascends through loose scree toward Gilman’s Point, located on the rim of Kilimanjaro’s crater. Reaching this point is a major milestone, as it marks the edge of the summit crater.
From Gilman’s Point, the trail continues along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. As the sun rises, the surrounding glaciers and vast African plains below create an unforgettable view.
After celebrating your achievement and taking photographs at the summit, you begin the descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and meal before continuing down to Horombo Hut for the night.
- Elevation: 4700m / 15,500ft to 5895m / 19,340ft
- Descent to: 3700m / 12,200ft
- Distance: 6 km up / 15 km down
- Hiking Time: 6–8 hours up / 6–8 hours down
- Habitat: Arctic Summit Zone / Alpine Desert
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
On the final day, the descent continues back through moorland and eventually into the dense rainforest zone. As you lose elevation, the air becomes warmer and the vegetation greener.
The trail passes Mandara Hut once again before continuing down through forest paths toward the park exit. These lower sections can sometimes be muddy due to rainfall, so trekking poles and proper footwear are helpful.
Upon reaching Marangu Gate, climbers receive their official summit certificates as recognition of their achievement. A vehicle will then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi, where you can relax and celebrate the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro climb.
- Elevation: 3700m / 12,200ft to 1700m / 5500ft
- Distance: 20 km / 12.5 miles
- Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
- Habitat: Forest
- Meals: Breakfast
