Overview

Combining coastal relaxation with wildlife exploration in southern Tanzania, this safari focuses on Nyerere National Park, one of Africa’s largest protected areas at over 30,000 square kilometres.

Formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, the park offers a quieter alternative to northern parks, with fewer vehicles and a strong emphasis on varied safari activities.

The program includes game drives, a boat safari along the Rufiji River, and a guided walking experience, allowing guests to experience wildlife from different perspectives.

Day By Day

Day 1: Arrival in Zanzibar

Arrival in Zanzibar brings you to a coastal setting defined by warm ocean air and the steady pace of island life. After meeting your driver at the airport, you transfer to your hotel where check-in is followed by time to rest after travel. Depending on arrival time, you may choose to walk along the beach, explore nearby streets, or simply relax at the property.

Zanzibar has served as a trading hub for centuries, influenced by African, Arab, and Indian cultures that remain visible in architecture and cuisine today. Overnight is spent at your hotel as preparations are made for your safari beginning tomorrow.

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for a scheduled light aircraft flight to Nyerere National Park. The flight takes roughly one hour and offers views of rivers, forests, and floodplains as you approach the reserve. Upon landing at a bush airstrip, your guide welcomes you and begins a game drive toward camp. Nyerere is known for its large populations of elephants, with estimates suggesting more than 15,000 elephants move through the ecosystem.

Wildlife sightings often include giraffes, buffalo, and various antelope species adapted to woodland habitats. After lunch at camp and some rest, an afternoon game drive continues until early evening before returning for dinner and overnight.

Meal Plan:     Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The day is dedicated to exploring different habitats within Nyerere, ranging from open savannah to riverine forest. Morning and afternoon game drives provide time to search for lions, hyenas, and the endangered African wild dog, a species that still maintains viable populations here. The park’s scale allows animals to move freely across large territories, which means sightings feel natural and unhurried.

Breaks are taken at scenic locations for meals and refreshments while discussing wildlife behaviour with your guide. With fewer vehicles compared to northern parks, encounters often take place without crowds, allowing longer observation periods before returning to camp for dinner.

Meal Plan:     Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today introduces a different perspective through a boat safari along the Rufiji River, the largest river system in Tanzania. Moving slowly along the water allows close observation of hippos, crocodiles, and birdlife that gather along the banks. More than 440 bird species have been recorded in the wider Selous ecosystem, making this activity especially rewarding for bird enthusiasts.

Elephants and buffalo are often seen approaching the river to drink, offering viewing opportunities not possible during standard game drives. The calm pace of the boat safari contrasts with vehicle-based exploration and provides insight into how wildlife depends on the river throughout the dry season. Return to camp follows in the late afternoon.

Meal Plan:     Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A guided walking safari takes place in the morning, accompanied by an armed ranger and professional guide. Walking allows attention to smaller details such as tracks, plants, insects, and signs of animal movement that are easily missed from a vehicle. Distances remain moderate and safety briefings are provided before departure.

After returning to camp for brunch and time to freshen up, transfer to the airstrip follows for your scheduled flight back to Zanzibar. Arrival in the afternoon brings you back to the coast, where you check into your hotel and spend the evening at leisure reflecting on the safari experience.

Meal Plan:     Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Your final day in Zanzibar is arranged around your international departure time. After breakfast, you may enjoy a relaxed morning at the hotel before transfer to Zanzibar Airport. The island’s blend of coastal scenery and historical influence provides a calm conclusion to the safari, contrasting with the wildlife areas visited on the mainland. Assistance is provided with airport transfer and departure arrangements, marking the end of your trip.
