Overview
Western Tanzania remains one of the least visited parts of the country, not because it lacks wildlife, but because of its distance and limited access. Katavi and Mahale national parks offer a different kind of safari experience, characterized by small visitor numbers, and landscapes that feel largely untouched. Katavi is known for seasonal floodplains that attract large concentrations of buffalo and hippos, sometimes gathering in numbers rarely seen elsewhere in East Africa.
Mahale Mountains on the other hand, protects one of Africa’s largest remaining wild chimpanzee populations, with an estimated 800 individuals living in the forested slopes. This tour combines classic game viewing with primate tracking and quiet time in a remote lakeshore environment.

Day By Day
Day 1: Arrival – Pick Up and Transfer to Arusha
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Arusha for overnight. The day is intentionally left open to allow time to rest after international travel and adjust before continuing west the following morning.
Arusha serves mainly as a transit town for safaris, sitting at the base of Mount Meru and functioning as the operational centre for many northern and western Tanzania trips. In the evening, you will meet a safari representative for a briefing covering internal flights, luggage limits for light aircraft, and practical expectations for visiting remote parks where facilities are simple but comfortable.
Day 2: Flight to Katavi National Park
After breakfast, you transfer to Arusha Airport for a scheduled light aircraft flight to Katavi National Park. The flight itself provides a clear sense of how remote the region is, crossing vast stretches of woodland and sparsely populated terrain before landing on a simple airstrip inside the park.
Upon arrival, your guide meets you for a game drive en route to camp. Katavi’s landscape is defined by seasonal lakes and open plains, and wildlife concentrations vary depending on water levels. During the dry season, animals gather around remaining water sources, often creating close viewing opportunities. After settling into camp, you may head out for a short afternoon game drive before dinner.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3 & 4: Katavi National Park Exploration
These two days are spent exploring Katavi through morning and afternoon game drives, allowing flexibility depending on wildlife movement and weather conditions.
Katavi is known for its large buffalo herds, sometimes numbering in the hundreds, and for hippo pools that can hold dense populations during the dry season when water becomes scarce. Lions are frequently seen following these herds, and crocodiles line the shrinking riverbanks waiting for opportunity. Unlike busier parks, vehicle encounters here are rare, meaning sightings often unfold without crowds.
The floodplains attract a range of antelope species and birdlife, and drives are paced according to wildlife activity rather than strict schedules, returning to camp between outings for rest and meals.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5: Flight to Mahale Mountains National Park
After breakfast, you transfer to the airstrip for a light aircraft flight to Mahale Mountains National Park. On arrival, a short boat transfer along Lake Tanganyika brings you to camp, with forested mountains rising directly from the shoreline. Mahale covers about 1,613 square kilometres and is accessible only by boat or aircraft, which helps maintain its quiet atmosphere.
The afternoon is usually relaxed, allowing time to settle in, swim in the lake, or walk along the beach. Guides provide an introduction to chimpanzee tracking procedures, including safety guidelines and what to expect during treks in dense forest terrain.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6 & 7: Chimpanzee Trekking and Mahale Activities
These days focus on chimpanzee tracking within the Mahale forest, guided by experienced trackers who locate chimp groups through vocal calls and nesting patterns. Treks vary in length depending on the movement of the chimpanzees, sometimes requiring steady hiking through forest trails and slopes. The habituated Mimikire group is the most frequently visited, and once located, time is spent quietly observing social interactions such as grooming, feeding, and play behaviour.
Chimpanzees share nearly 98 percent of human DNA, and their behaviour often feels familiar in subtle ways. Outside trekking hours, guests can kayak, swim in Lake Tanganyika, or take short forest walks, allowing a slower pace between activities.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 8: Return To Arusha - Departure
After breakfast, you transfer by boat back to the airstrip for your scheduled flight to Arusha. The return flight offers another aerial perspective of western Tanzania’s scale, reinforcing how isolated these parks are compared to the more visited northern circuit.
Upon arrival in Arusha, you will be transferred either to Kilimanjaro International Airport for onward travel or to a hotel depending on flight schedules. The safari concludes here, having combined remote wildlife viewing, primate encounters, and time spent in two of Tanzania’s most secluded protected areas.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch
