Overview

Mahale Mountains National Park is one of the most remote wildlife areas in Tanzania, often reached by air and boat along the shores of Lake Tanganyika. The focus here is not traditional game drives but time spent on foot in forested mountains tracking wild chimpanzees with experienced guides.

The ecosystem here combines tropical forest, clear freshwater beaches, and quiet settings that encourage a slower pace of observation. This tour allows several days in the park to increase trekking opportunities while also leaving space to rest, swim, and experience daily life at camp.

Day By Day

Day 1: Arrival - Pick Up and Transfer to Arusha

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed by our driver and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. The day is intentionally kept light to allow recovery after travel and preparation for the remote portion of the safari ahead.

Depending on arrival time, you may relax at the lodge, organize luggage for the domestic flight, or take a short walk within the hotel grounds. In the evening, a short briefing is provided covering flight logistics, park regulations, and expectations for chimpanzee trekking. Overnight in Arusha provides a comfortable transition before continuing west toward Mahale.

After breakfast, you transfer to Arusha Airport for a scheduled light aircraft flight to western Tanzania. The flight crosses varied landscapes including highlands, lakes, and remote countryside before landing near Lake Tanganyika.

From the airstrip, a boat transfer takes you along the lakeshore to the camp, offering the first views of Mahale’s forested mountains rising directly from the water. After arrival and lunch, there is time to settle into camp and receive a detailed briefing from park guides about trekking procedures and safety guidelines. The afternoon remains relaxed, allowing you to adjust to the environment before activities begin the following day.

Meal Plan:     Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

These two days are dedicated to chimpanzee tracking within the forested slopes of the Mahale Mountains. Each morning begins with a walk into the forest accompanied by experienced guides who follow fresh signs and vocalizations to locate one of the habituated chimpanzee groups.

Trekking times vary depending on the animals’ movement, sometimes requiring patience and steady walking through uneven terrain. Once located, time is spent quietly observing their behavior, interactions, and feeding habits while maintaining respectful distance. Afternoons are generally free for rest, swimming in Lake Tanganyika, or short nature walks near camp, allowing recovery between trekking days.

Meal Plan:     Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After active trekking days, today focuses on the lakeshore environment surrounding the camp. Guests may take part in kayaking, snorkeling, or short boat excursions along the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika, one of the world’s deepest freshwater lakes.

The calm setting offers time to slow down and appreciate the natural surroundings, with opportunities to observe fish, birdlife, and changing light over the mountains. Guided walks near the camp can also be arranged for those interested in learning about local plants and smaller wildlife. The day remains flexible, allowing each guest to choose between activity and relaxation.

Meal Plan:     Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today remains open depending on interest and energy levels. Guests may choose another chimpanzee trek if permits and conditions allow, offering a chance for additional observation or photography, or instead spend the day resting at camp. The lakeshore provides space for swimming, reading, or simply enjoying the quiet setting away from busy travel routes.

Staff at the camp can arrange short guided walks or cultural discussions about the area and conservation efforts. Keeping this day flexible allows the safari to feel balanced after several active days in the forest.

Meal Plan:     Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, you depart camp by boat transfer back to the airstrip for your scheduled flight to Arusha. The return flight provides one last view of the Mahale Mountains and Lake Tanganyika before crossing back toward northern Tanzania.

Upon arrival in Arusha, you will be met and transferred either to Kilimanjaro International Airport for onward travel or to a hotel depending on your departure arrangements. The tour concludes here, marking the end of your time in one of Tanzania’s most remote and distinctive national parks.

Meal Plan:     Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
